Correct ventilation for a comfortable living climate in conservatories and sun gardens.
But how does you judge the climate of a conservatory? What are the technical possibilities of aeration and ventilation and how can the ventilation be automated? During the planning of a residential conservatory, the right ventilation components should be considered
Comfortable living climate in the conservatory
The main factors influencing the temperatures in the living conservatory are the quality of the glazing, the additional heating power available for the transition months, the orientation of the conservatory to the sky, the shading and the ventilation.
The summer interior temperature of the conservatory reaches without appropriate measures areas, where it is impossible for humans and plants to stay.
The components used for the ventilation and shading must be applied in such a way that they meet the objective of creating a (year-round) pleasant living climate and a comfortable environment for humans.
Criteria for the assessment of the climate
The judgement of the consumer over the climate in the conservatory and thus to the comfort is attached to very complex and multilayered connections.
The judgement of the user over the climate in the conservatory depends on different factors.
- Air temperature
- Air humidity
- Air velocity
- Temperature of the wrapping surface
- Possibility of heat dissipation
- and the perception of the individual
It is important for the comfort that the heat is emitted evenly and that there is no local discomfort.
The demands on the technology used for ventilation, shading and heating are considerable. Individual measures, such as only external shading, are not sufficient – as a partial solution, however, they are indispensable.
Basic information about the ventilation units
The ventilation units are intended to enable continuous removal of the heated indoor air and prevent overheating of the conservatory. The interior air can escape for example over roof windows or also over motor-operated ventilation units. By the employment of manually operated supply air devices and roof windows the natural or free ventilation of the conservatory is made possible. This kind of ventilation is caused by temperature and pressure differences between the outside air and the air inside the conservatory. The roof windows can be opened or closed for example by a hand crank manually. A controlled electrical operation of the roof window is possible. Here the drive takes place for example over spindle or chain motors. In combination with an ON/OFF switch or a temperature controller a comfortable operation is possible. The control of the roof window through a wind-, rain- and sun sensor or a weather station allows a secured ventilation even in your absence. Electronically controlled and motor-driven ventilation and shading devices automatically regulate the climate in the conservatory.
Conservatory climate concept
The conservatory control system stands for an entire concept for the automatic control of the installed shading systems and the aeration and ventilation devices.
Here all relevant climatic data (temperature, humidity, wind, rain, sun) are seized and evaluated. The conservatory climate is thereby automatically controlled – even in the absence of the user. The installation expenditure of the bus – system is here small.
Correct ventilation for a comfortable living climate in the conservatory
If you want to enjoy your conservatory at any time of the year, a well thought-out and adequately dimensioned ventilation system is an absolute must. Fresh air and a pleasant climate have a positive effect on your well-being. In the free nature just like in the conservatory. A comfortable climate depends essentially on how the ventilation system was included in the planning of the conservatory. Only by the correct interaction of all relevant factors you will be able to use your conservatory permanently. With the solar radiation the short-wave sunbeams arrive unhindered into the interior of the winter garden, meet there the walls, furniture and soil and heat up the conservatory. Without the right choice of roofing, shading and ventilation, the interior temperature on hot summer days will quickly rise to an unbearable level. The so-called greenhouse effect ensures that you cannot use your conservatory in the desired way.
With the ventilation and extraction, the thermals are used as natural air movement.
We distinguish between three different types:
In consideration of the natural thermals, the fresh air flows into the conservatory via a manual air supply unit and the indoor air flows out through a roof window. The roof window can be operated both manually and via an electronic control system.
The mechanical aeration and electrical ventilation whereby over a manual supply air device the fresh air flows into the conservatory and a motorized exhaust air device leads the interior air outside. The exhaust air device can be operated by a switch (on/off), a multi-stage switch or an electronic control.
The electrical ventilation whereby the fresh air is led into the conservatory via an electronically controlled supply air device (without motor-driven fan) and a motor-driven exhaust air device leads the inside air to the outside.
The supply and exhaust air device is regulated by an electronic control. Regarding a sufficient dimensioning of the aeration and exhaust air devices the following criteria should be considered with the selection among other things:
– Sky orientation of the conservatory
– Roofing of the conservatory
– Shading
– Material of the walls to the core house
These factors should be included in the calculation for the selection of devices. There is special software available for this purpose.
A rough calculation enables the rough determination of the required air exchange rate in advance:
Volume (m3) x factor (/h)
- without sun protection: factor = 50
- Sun protection inside: factor = 20
- External sun protection: factor = 10
In order to co-ordinate the existing aeration and ventilation devices, the shading and the heating exactly one on the other, an automatic conservatory control is a very useful additional equipment. It depends not only on the fact that the individual devices do their service, but that all components in their functions and characteristics function exactly one on the other co-ordinated. Conservatory controls analyze the climate inside and outside of the conservatory and control the attached devices in such a way that always the desired condition prevails.
WS1000® and WS1® are control and operating units for building services engineering in conservatories, private houses and smaller office buildings. The automatic control unit ensures an optimum room climate and offers safety and comfort functions. At the same time, the energy balance of the building is optimized by the perfect interaction of the building services.
The central element of the control is the touch-sensitive color display. Here the connected devices are operated and settings are adjusted. The user interface guides through the setting steps as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
As soon as there is no more operation, the screen shows the current weather data, the course of the sun or precipitation. To save energy, the display can automatically dim or switch off completely depending on the ambient brightness. Drives and devices are connected directly to the controls. In addition, radio channels are available for wireless communication. Radio modules can also be used to control additional drives and devices.
The most important automatic functions of the controls are sun protection and ventilation. Awnings, blinds and shutters are controlled according to brightness and additionally according to sun direction and height. The slat angle of blinds can be adjusted according to the position of the sun. This prevents direct sunlight, but the room is illuminated as far as possible by daylight.
In addition, the shades only shut down when the desired room temperature is reached. In this way, the heat of the sun is utilized. Irrespective of this, the control systems protect the connected shadings from damage by wind or rain. The integrated timer enables comfort functions such as closing the shutters as privacy protection.
Automatic ventilation depends on temperature and humidity. For example, in summer the windows are opened at night for cooling until the desired room temperature is reached. A rain alarm function protects furniture and furnishings from moisture damage. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are also regulated by the controls, so that the desired room climate is maintained.
The security in the building is improved by connecting smoke and motion detectors. In the display of the controls, images from video cameras can be shown, for example for monitoring the entrance area.
Even individual wishes, such as the timer switching of a pond pump or the atmospheric lighting of garden and house, can be realized with the WS1000® and WS1® building control systems.
